Overview

What F2 covers

F2 Management Information and Costing succeeds the FMA variant of MA/FMA Management Accounting. The scope is narrowed to core costing and basic management information — budgeting basics, cost classification, absorption and marginal costing, process costing, and standard costing with basic variances. Advanced topics like investment appraisal, performance measurement, and detailed variance analysis are removed.

Key changes vs MA/FMA

  • Scope narrowed — advanced variance analysis, investment appraisal, and performance measurement removed
  • Focus on core costing techniques: absorption, marginal, process, job/batch, service
  • Budgeting simplified to functional budgets and basic types
  • Standard costing limited to basic variances only

REMOVEDJob/batch costing, process costing, service costing (MA/FMA C3)MA/FMA C3 covered: job and batch costing (characteristics, when appropriate, prepare cost records and accounts, establish costs from given information); process costing (characteristics, when appropriate, normal and abnormal losses and gains, by-products vs joint products, value at point of separation, evaluate benefit of further processing); service/operation costing (characteristics of service organisations, when appropriate, suitable unit cost measures, cost analysis). All removed from F2 — these methods appear in K2 at the Knowledge level.
REMOVEDAlternative cost accounting principles (MA/FMA C4)MA/FMA C4: explain and differentiate ABC, target costing and life-cycle costing from traditional techniques — entirely absent from F2.
REMOVEDLIFO inventory valuation (MA/FMA C1a(ix))MA/FMA required LIFO, FIFO and AVCO. F2 C1c requires only FIFO and AVCO (periodic weighted average and cumulative weighted average). LIFO removed.
REMOVEDEOQ, reorder levels, JIT (MA/FMA C1a(iv)–(x))MA/FMA covered: calculate ordering and holding costs including buffer inventory; calculate and interpret optimal reorder quantities (EOQ); EOQ with discounts; gradual replenishment calculations; reorder levels where demand in lead time is constant; JIT as inventory management approach. None of these are in F2 C1.
REMOVEDLabour turnover and efficiency/capacity/production volume ratios (MA/FMA C1b)MA/FMA C1b: calculate level and analyse costs and causes of labour turnover; calculate labour efficiency, capacity and production volume ratios; interpret entries in the labour account. Not in F2 C2.
REMOVEDReciprocal method for service cost centre reapportionment (MA/FMA C1c(iv))MA/FMA C1c(iv): "Reapportion service cost centre costs to production cost centres (including using the reciprocal method where service cost centres work for each other)." F2 D1 covers allocation, apportionment and absorption of production overheads but does not explicitly include the reciprocal method for service cost centre reapportionment.
REMOVEDHigh-low method (MA/FMA B2b)MA/FMA B2b: use high-low method to separate fixed and variable elements including semi-variable and stepped fixed costs and changes in variable cost per unit; explain advantages/disadvantages. This was in the statistical techniques section B2 of MA/FMA. F2 B2 (Cost behaviour) covers identifying and calculating variable/fixed/stepped fixed/semi-variable costs but does not include the high-low method as an explicit outcome.
EXAM CHANGEOTs increase; MTQ count and marks reduced; MTQ topics changeMA/FMA: 35×2-mark OTs (70 marks) + 3×10-mark MTQs covering Budgeting, Standard costing and Performance measurement (30 marks) = 100 marks. F2: 45×2-mark OTs (90 marks) + 2×5-mark MTQs covering Accounting for costs (Section C) and Costing techniques (Section D) (10 marks) = 100 marks. The 3 MA/FMA MTQ topics (Budgeting, Standard costing, Performance measurement) are replaced by the 2 F2 MTQ topics (Accounting for costs, Costing techniques). Total MTQ marks reduced from 30 to 10.
