How long does each take?

ACCA typically takes 2.5–4 years depending on exemptions, while CA India takes around 4.5–5 years including a 2-year compulsory articleship.

ACCA has 13 papers across three levels — Applied Knowledge (3), Applied Skills (6) and Strategic Professional (4, of which SBL and SBR are compulsory and two are options). You also complete the Ethics and Professional Skills module and 36 months of practical experience (PER), which can be gained alongside your exams rather than in a fixed articleship.

CA India runs through Foundation, Intermediate and Final levels set by ICAI, with a compulsory 2-year articleship under a practising Chartered Accountant. Graduates may enter directly at Intermediate.

ACCA offers four exam sittings a year (March, June, September and December), and Applied Knowledge papers can be taken on demand, so you can pace papers around work or college.

What does each cost in India?

ACCA usually costs more in total — roughly ₹3–6 lakhs including tuition and exam fees — compared with roughly ₹1.5–3 lakhs for CA India including ICAI fees and coaching.

At Global Fin X, ACCA tuition is charged per paper, from ₹8,000–₹15,000 depending on the level. Strategic Professional papers are priced higher. ACCA registration and exam fees are paid separately, directly to ACCA (UK).

Exemptions reduce the ACCA cost: every exempted paper is one you do not pay tuition or exam fees for. CA India costs are mostly ICAI registration and exam fees plus coaching, spread over a longer period.

Which has better job prospects in India and abroad?

For statutory audit and tax practice in India, CA is the stronger credential; for international roles and MNC finance, ACCA is more portable.

CA India is the gold standard for Indian statutory audit and tax. Statutory audits of Indian companies are signed by Chartered Accountants in practice who are ICAI members, so ACCA does not replace CA for that work.

ACCA is recognised in 180+ countries and is accepted at Big 4 firms, MNCs, banks and global capability centres in India. It gives direct portability to the UK, the Gulf, South-East Asia and Africa, whereas CA India usually requires conversion exams to practise in most other countries.

Can you do both ACCA and CA?

Yes — qualified Indian CAs can receive up to 9 ACCA paper exemptions, leaving only the four Strategic Professional papers.

Exemptions cover the entire Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels, so a qualified CA needs to complete SBL, SBR and two options. This makes ACCA a common add-on for CAs who want international portability.

Many CA Inter and CA Final students also take ACCA papers alongside CA. Exemptions are assessed individually by ACCA based on your qualifications.

Who should choose which?

Choose ACCA if…

  • You prefer flexible pacing with no compulsory articleship (36 months of practical experience instead).
  • You are a graduate or Class 12 student wanting an international route (graduates enter at Applied Knowledge; school leavers via the FIA route).

  • You are comfortable with a 2-year compulsory articleship under a practising CA.
