36 months' practical experience
What is a relevant role?
A job where your time is spent on accounting, finance, audit and assurance, or related technical areas such as taxation, insolvency and forensics. Experience can be gained before you register with ACCA, while you study or after the exams, but prior experience still has to be signed off by a practical experience supervisor at the employer where you gained it.
Where can I work?
In any sector and any size of organisation — you do not need an ACCA Approved Employer. Your experience need not be in one role or one continuous period; you can combine roles and employers, and voluntary work for clubs, charities or associations can count. What matters is a total of 36 months in relevant roles, appropriately supervised and signed off by your practical experience supervisor.
Can I count part-time work?
Yes. When you record a role in MyExperience you give your hours and the percentage of time spent on accounting or finance tasks, and the tool calculates how much counts towards 36 months. If 50% of your time is accounting and finance work, a 12-month period gives you six months of PER.
What if I take a career break?
PER counts time gaining relevant experience, not time employed. Extended breaks (for example maternity leave, caring for a relative or long-term illness) do not count. Add an end date to your role, then add a new role with a new start date when you return.
What happens when I leave or change roles?
Update your PER record and have your supervisor sign off the time and objectives achieved before you go. MyExperience prompts you when you indicate you are leaving a role or reach 36 months. You then complete the remaining time and objectives in your new role.
What if I am not in a relevant role?
Still record the role in MyExperience. The time will not count towards 36 months, but if your work is supervised by a suitably qualified person you may achieve these performance objectives: Stakeholder relationship management, Strategy and innovation, and Leadership and management.
Performance objectives
What are performance objectives?
Workplace objectives closely linked to the exams. You must achieve nine: all five Essentials and any four of the 17 Technical objectives. You demonstrate each through activities at work and write a statement giving examples that show your practical experience supervisor you have achieved it.
Which objectives should I choose?
All 5 Essentials plus 4 Technical objectives that match your role — they are much easier to achieve when they link to your everyday work. ACCA's competency framework helps you choose.
How is a performance objective structured?
Three parts: a description summarising the objective; five elements setting out the tasks, skills and behaviours you must show; and a statement of 200–500 words with examples of your work. You claim all five elements and submit the statement to your supervisor for approval.
Can I be exempt from performance objectives?
Possibly. If you work for an ACCA Approved Employer with trainee development approval at Gold or Platinum level, your employer may let you claim a performance objective exemption, because its training programme covers the objectives.
Practical experience supervisors
What does a supervisor do?
Guides and supports you: helps choose your performance objectives, sets targets and timescales, gives access to suitable work, reviews your progress regularly and signs off the objectives you achieve and the time you claim towards 36 months.
Who can be my supervisor?
Usually your line manager. To sign off performance objectives, the supervisor must be a qualified accountant (a member of an IFAC member body). If your line manager is not qualified, they can still sign off your time, and you nominate an additional qualified supervisor — another manager, a consultant, or the organisation's external accountants or auditors — to sign off your objectives.
Can friends or family be my supervisor?
Avoid it where possible because of conflicts of interest. If it cannot be avoided, disclose the relationship to ACCA when you apply for membership.
Recording experience
How do I log my experience?
In the online MyExperience tool inside myACCA. It records your employment details, calculates your experience, helps you plan, completes performance objectives, submits them for approval and tracks progress.
How do I record a career break?
Add an end date to your current role and add a new role with a new start date when you start working again. Breaks such as maternity leave or long-term illness do not count towards PER.
What should I write in my statements?
A concise 200–500 word summary of the experience behind each performance objective, with details of one or two tasks you were involved in. Be concise, avoid jargon, give evidence and examples, and do not repeat information.
Approved Employers
What is an ACCA Approved Employer?
An employer whose learning and development policies and systems ACCA has accredited. If yours holds trainee development approval at Gold or Platinum level, it may let you claim a performance objective exemption. You still need 36 months' experience recorded in MyExperience.
What if I leave an Approved Employer?
If you were claiming the exemption, complete the Approved Employer PER Confirmation form and send the signed copy to ACCA so it can update your MyExperience record. Keep the original. You then complete the remaining time and objectives with your new employer.
General questions about PER
I have passed all my exams but not completed PER. What is my status?
You cannot apply for ACCA membership until you have passed all the exams, completed the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and completed PER.
Can I use experience from before I started ACCA?
Yes. Experience from earlier roles, before or after registering as an ACCA student, can count, with no specific time limit — but the qualified person who supervised you then must be able to review and sign it off.
Can lecturing experience count towards PER?
Yes, up to 12 months, if the teaching is at least at the level of the Applied Skills exams and covers basic accounting, business studies or finance-related subjects.
PER runs alongside your exams. See the ACCA qualification overview, ACCA salaries in India and the next exam sittings.
Studying while you work?
Our recorded lectures fit around a full-time job, so you can build PER and clear papers at the same time.
